Paul: The opening track is great. It's exactly the sort of thing I was into in my early-mid twenties. So why do I find the album hard to love? I'm 40 years older. That might have something to do with it. But I think there's another thing at play here.

Looking back on The Primitives, The Darling Buds and their like*, beyond their well-known singles was their work that memorable? Without looking it up how many Primitives songs could you name? Three? Could you even get to three Darling Buds songs? Perhaps their style doesn't lend itself to longevity.

Which brings me back to the Cords. This album is alright but it's not very interesting and kind of merges into one big jangle. They've got their career in front of them, their style may develop and I wouldn't dismiss the idea of listening to more by them in the future. I don't see me returning to this though. I'm all jangled out.

* Shop Assistants were ace though.

Dean: It sounded like tinnitus. Initially it was insignificant like a spirited guitar playing enthusiastically and an ambivalent female vocal but later this tinny drum indistinguishable from a tambourine knocking my eardrum with incessant speed.

I'm not sure what to do Doctor but I'm definitely going to avoid that experience again. It is, as Paul has suggested, immature like a fledgling bird chirping fearfully. I'm not at all grateful Stuart. I still love you though, unconditionally.

Ben: The Cords - I love the energy, the creativity and originality to create fun, engaging, catchy, pop tunes with just drums, bass and rhythm guitar. I’m not getting the tinnitus sound, but that’s maybe because I have it permanently in my ears anyway. At the end of the day though it’s pretty basic stuff. As a test comparison I thought of the Undertones and their early albums. They were more fun, energetic, rockier and down to earth, more relatable. A faster paced Strawberry Switchblade maybe? haha just looked up that the cords are scottish too. It’s just a bit weird that these 2 scottish sisters are passing up all the modern instrumentation and technology and purposely doing eighties retro stuff - it’s a bit manufactured and sterile maybe? Anyway, let’s move on shall we?

Stu: I will LOVE the CORDS until I die. YES, they are familiar and YES, they are not breaking new ground!! Imagine if every band was looking for something new!!! I love these sweet Scottish imps, reminding me of all the pretty Scottish girls before them, Clare Grogan, the girls from Camera OBSCURA, the girls from Belle and Sebastian etc.

I don’t want to listen intently to every record I play, sometimes I just want to jump around a bit and flay my arms!! It is true, very true indeed that I love me some JANGLE, my huge record collection will back me up on this, I have crates of it and I love it just like I love Henry Weston’s Cider!!! I will be listening to this tonight as I fall asleep with my concoction of new medication that should fall a bull elephant! Since June 12, this is the first stretch of 3 days whilst feeling relaxed. I awake each morning hoping for another and a chance to listen to the CORDS again!!!
