Paul - Really enjoyed the Steven Adams album Ben, thank you. It has a mix of styles, which I always appreciate, I like him as a vocalist and there is a poetic quality to the lyrics at times too.
Unusually for me it’s a couple of the slower ones that stand out, Canary and Oh Dear. I also have a lot of time for Bring on the Naps and Mr Sunshine. One other thing, is using the bass line from Joy Division’s Colony a wise homage or a bit naughty?
I’d say it’s easily in the top ten of what we’ve heard so far. It’s close to being a star album for me but not quite close enough.
Ben - generally a really enjoyable collection of songs, nice catchy tunes with meaningful, intelligent, lyrics and a bit of fun thrown in (bring on the naps). A bit like Purple Mountains for me in the serious places, not a bad thing. I think I prefer the upbeat songs but I really like Oh Dear too. However I cant really get to grips with Gracechurch st or Note to Self, which spoil the album a bit for me. I think the album would be great without those tracks (and would only be 33 mins long, woohoo!). His most recent album, Drops, is worth a listen too - esp Living in the local Void which I heard on Gideon Coe’s show and made me listen to him in the first place. Good stuff!
Stu - The up tempo tunes certainly trump the others! Bring on the Naps and Going to Everglades! They bounce along with a joyful disposition and lyrical wit! I can engage with the slower tunes and I don’t consider the LP too long! Even though I’m sure I have ADHD I can easily last an hour on a record! Ben likes his 30 mins unless it’s Steely Dan! I’ve also listened to DROPS which I consider a better LP. This record would sit nicely in my collection BUT it wouldn’t be a go to classic!! Be sure to check out other FIKA & FORTUNA releases. 7/10 🌟
