Stu: THANK YOU DEAN, this is an easy one for me! I’ve tried Amyl on 2 previous occasions with no luck! My engagement stops after the first track, one of those voices that just grates with me! Musically it’s not really where I dial in! I think they have a great look and plenty of spunk BUT they leave me naked and cold cowering under the sun in my bikini 👙 I’ve listened 2 times now and still stone cold 🥶
Paul: I've heard bits and pieces of Amyl and the Sniffers on the radio over the last few years. They've always made me sit up and take notice, the question I've had has been whether a whole album of it would be a bit much. Album opener Jerkin' is a musical punch in the face and broadly speaking I prefer these punkier numbers (like It's Mine, Doing In Me Head, Going Somewhere) to the more standard-paced efforts. The slower tracks Big Dreams and Bailing on Me are appreciated and well done too.
It's not quite a star album for me but I've enjoyed this greatly. There will always be a big place in my heart for shouty females fronting punk rock bands. If any music can change the world it will be female-fronted punk bands that do it. More power to them.
Dean: I share with PG a belief that punk has its place especially now within a generation of muchly ignored young people expected in many ways to fund the continued ambivalence of an older one. Do I find the music a little uninformed? Perhaps I feel a little ill qualified to decide. The general mood of the record is not represented by the first record - which absolute drew me in. It is a search for a soul mate, a partner, for a shared experience and in the absence of that lies a belief in success and the ambiguous nature of that drug.
I was very much drawn to the anger and vulnerability presented. Something in my teenage life admires the attempt. I think A&tS is something to be aware of for aesthetic and noble reasons. It's a strange place to live in, this world who's populace is fearfully and distrustful of liberalism. We search maybe for someone or something to represent our views and to give direction to those unresolved tensions in our lives.
A little discomfort within lyrics, within difference, within resentment, greed, should perhaps be welcomed. It is a catalyst to change. I found this record compulsive listening for a few weeks and for that I am very grateful. It took me away from my everyday and even into my time in Oz. Which was not always comfortable and comforting but always stimulating. I'm not sure if it has earned a star but from my perspective, it is blinding in parts 🌟
Ben: She is a presence and no doubt. Not much singing going on but she controls her delivery so well - it’s not the all out energy of traditional punk, she puts just the right amount of effort in, it’s true of her stage performance too - striding around rather than jumping like a loon. The songs are catchy enough aren’t they, with a very solid band. It’s definitely a mature type of punk, if it’s punk at all. What are they about? What are they trying to do? Who knows, but they seem to be having fun trying. I think she could be big in her own right though. I’ll keep the album in my library but I’m not sure I’ll be listening much - it’s just a bit of fun isn’t it?
