21. Banks & Steelz: Anything But Words

Chosen By: Paul

Paul - It’s not what I expected. When I first heard it I wanted to apologise but on further listening I do like bits of it. I picked it because I enjoy Banks’ work with Interpol and heard Giant which is tremendous. I wasn’t quite ready for the hard hip-hop. Having said that I really like Sword in the Stone. There are other good tracks too in Love and War, Gonna Make It, Point of View - in fact the album finds its feet somewhat as it goes on. While I probably won’t go back to it, if they ever work together again I’ll give that a go too.

Stu - I’ve listened to this twice now. The first listen was a shock to the ears and I didn’t engage at all! After what Paul said I thought I’d give it another go! Alas I did and I was still left rather flat!
Like Peej I’m a big fan of INTERPOL, and the little extracts that sound like interpol are good BUT it’s all swept away by the fierce rap and hip hop overtures! After 2 plays I still couldn’t find a hook to hang my ears on! I applaud the collaboration but it just was not for me. It finds itself at the bottom of my list of all our reviews. For Banks and endeavour I’ll give it a 4/10

Ben - Well, that album was up against it from the very start. On top of the lukewarm reviews from you guys, I’m not a fan of Interpol or similar artists (Muse, or that other noisy one that Stu recommended last year) or modern rap. Both genres are usually a bit aggressive for me, they tend to lack nuance and charm imo. Same is true of this album. Although it wasn’t as ‘in your face’ as I was fearing, I would struggle to ever really enjoy that. The first track was probably my favourite, reminded me of mama said knock you out, which is a banger.
