19. Tame Impala: Currents

Chosen by: Ben

Released: 17 July 2015

Paul - It’s not the worst record we’ve picked this year but it’s a low bar. Wishy-washy electronica and an uninteresting vocodered-up voice are not my thing. Not as clever as Sparks, not as danceable as Hot Chip, the Impala seems fixated on later period Flaming Lips and dulling that down. I won’t be listening again.

Ben - I quite enjoyed listening using my headphones - decent tunes and lots of interesting nuances. I do feel that it is slightly one dimensional, maybe because he did everything himself and missed out on the dynamism that comes from working with other people. A ‘soft’ yes from me.

Stu - Good point Ben, all of his own making and towards the end it can be a little self indulgent. I like the style and like Ben I love the little motifs he adds! Great late night listening and it is warm and soft so you can see it’s appeal! A nice 8/10 from me!! Thanks Kev ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
