13. Belle And Sebastian: A Bit of Previous

Paul - I was looking forward to this. I don’t know too much Belle and Sebastian but I’m aware they’re kind of indie national treasures. The first half has maybe three good tracks in a 'weren’t the eighties great, we should live there’ kind of way but the second half - it’s probably best I don’t say anything.

Ben - B and S have gone for a fuller sound on this album which doesn’t work too well for me, I preferred a stripped back sound from them. It sounds too nice, too easy listening, it needs an edge somewhere. Add to that quite a few ballads and down tempo songs and you end up with the feeling that the record needs a bit of a kick up the backside. That said the melodies are good and the basslines are tight.

Stu - I’m a little bit of a B&S fan, they hooked me very early on and they ticked all my boxes!! TIGERMILK is a classic LP, Dog on Wheels is a gem of a song! Then If you’re feeling sinister with the classic lyric, ‘and now he’s throwing discus for Liverpool and Widnes’. A rotating collective of 9 members all led by Stuart Murdoch. College kids hooking up with clever lyrics and an array of instruments! Along with the gorgeous Isobel Campbell what was there to not like!!! I’ve seen them 5 times, danced on stage with them at Glastonbury and have all their LPS! This LP then, sit down and listen to it, it’s really rather wonderful! It’s not a get ready to go out on a Friday record, it’s more a Sunday morning LP, and I like that! It doesn’t need a kick up the arse, you want that, go check out Liam Gallaghers new LP! I LOVE BELLE & SEBASTIAN and upon listening to this LP, I still do ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 8/10
